Do I Need an Outdoor TV | SunBrite TV | HiFi House

As the weather gets warmer, one of the most common questions we hear is “Do I need an outdoor TV?”

While outdoor televisions are generally more expensive than their indoor counterparts, we’ve seen them displayed under waterfalls running videos like this one, strongly supporting their durability and resilience.

So is the luxury of a true outdoor TV worth the extra money? Read on as we explain why.

Weather Conditions and the Elements

Snow, rain, heat, wind – there’s not an indoor TV out there with fighting chance against Mother Nature. On the other hand, outdoor TVs are specifically designed from the ground up to survive in the harshest weather conditions and climates.

Though we can’t guarantee an outdoor TV will endure a typhoon or hurricane, this video from Digital Trends gives us hope when it comes to all weather conditions not accompanied by “STORM OF THE CENTURY” reports.

Likewise, if you’re looking to enjoy some entertainment by the poolside, you don’t want your indoor TV getting splashed by the kids (or by one of your relative’s infamous cannonballs). Not only is it a highly dangerous electrical hazard; it’s a surefire way to short out the display.

Ultimately, an outdoor TV can withstand much, much more abuse than any indoor TV, and while we don’t suggest you don’t push your SunBrite TV to the limits demonstrated by Digital Trends, it’s nice to know you won’t have to worry so much.

Temperature and Condensation

Temperature changes and condensation are the top killers of indoor TVs living outdoors.

You can’t do much to stop it, and it’s the one thing you always have to worry about. Even if you cover the set, there’s a good chance condensation will still find its way inside, quickly turning your frugal attempt to view the Eagles game from the comfort of your porch into a walk of shame to the dumpster.

Additionally, indoor TVs don’t handle extreme temperatures very well. Overheating will be a major problem, especially on bright, hot, sunny days. While keeping your display in a cool, shaded area will certainly help, it’s not an end-all solution.

Fortunately, an outdoor TV eliminates both issues entirely. Along with proper ventilation and powerful fans to cool them, outdoor TVs are built to block out condensation completely, meaning you don’t have to fret over science frying your new television.

Maintenance and Installation

You’re not going to want to keep your indoor TV mounted by your pool or anywhere outside your home, that’s for sure, and when it inevitably breaks, you’re going to need to replace it.

But what about a covered porch or patio?

With a covered porch or patio, you’re still going to run into the temperature and condensation problems mentioned earlier. Likewise, an indoor TV operating outdoors is still dangerous, with a risk of shock or electrocution due to moisture and wear you might not notice until it’s too late.

On the flipside, maintenance of an outdoor TV is super easy. While you’ll still have to perform some occasional cleaning and care, it typically consists of little more than a few minutes with a soft towel and some water. If you want an idea of what you’re in for, here’s a page from the manual for SunBrite TV’s 4660HD.

Keep in mind that you’ll still want to cover the set. This is for added peace of mind and protection. It will also defend the display from dust and debris.

Outdoor Performance

How many times have you tried watching TV from the comfort of your couch when the sun shines through an open window, painting the display with a blinding glare?

Now take that same TV and put it on your porch or patio. How much better do you expect it to perform in direct sunlight?

Indoor TVs are made for the shade, meaning the second you bring that glossy panel into a bright area, you’re going to run into some big problems seeing anything on the screen.

Outdoor TVs use technology designed specifically to combat glare and bright light, meaning you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite TV shows, sporting events, and movies even on the sunniest summer days.

When you want a bright, vivid, sun-resistant picture, you definitely want an outdoor TV.

Warranty

Running your indoor TV outdoors is one of the fastest ways you can void your warranty. Likewise, if you drop or damage the set while you’re moving it from place to place, you’re out of luck and out another TV.

An outdoor television doesn’t have this problem. As of this writing, SunBrite TV provides a 2-year limited warranty on new purchases through an authorized dealer for both residential and commercial applications.

You’re literally saving hours of your time if you use an outdoor TV on a regular basis. Plus you’re getting the “WOW” factor of a TV mounted outside your home and avoiding the stress of a void warranty if something goes wrong down the line.

So is an outdoor TV worth it?

If you’re considering a TV for anywhere outside your home, absolutely yes.

When an indoor TV lives outdoors, your expectations should be realistic. It will die at some point, and you’re best bet is something designed for that environment. That said, we would never recommend or suggest using an indoor TV outside for any reason.

Outdoor televisions are designed from the ground up to live on a porch, patio, or by your pool. Between the offerings of Séura and SunBrite TV, there’s an outdoor display to fit your needs and budget. While it is certainly a luxury product, it’s one that can provide years of entertainment if properly installed and cared for.
